PASCAGOULA, Mississippi — Wrapping up a study project on Ancient Egypt, two seventh-graders from George County Middle School will unveil special artworks Friday at the Katrina Research Center at the Gulf Park campus of the University of Southern Mississippi.

"We're thrilled because this is one of those things that just warms your heart," said Deanne Nuwer, USM associate professor, history teacher and director of the Katrina Research Center in Long Beach.

"The students are doing such good work," Nuwer said. "We're able to show their works, and whenever you can do that for young people, it's a privilege."

The opening of the Ancient Egypt Exhibit will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Christian Odom will exhibit his work on three Egyptian pyramids, while Morgan Moons will display her hand-sculpted Great Sphinx.

They had the top artwork among students who participated in the project.

The unit of study was a part of the curriculum, social studies teacher Lindsey Terry said. Students received two tests grades for their work.

"The chapter on ancient Egypt was a great outlet to let them do this project with because there are so many beautiful things about ancient Egypt," she said.

"Students today are so hands-on," she said. "With all the technology students have, it's sometimes difficult to get them to relate to something where there was no technology."

But this three-week project helped history "come alive in their minds," she said.

"It made it real for them," she added. "All of my students' projects turned out to be so phenomenal."

Terry also praised the support of the school administration.

Assistant Principal Grant Dickinson said, "I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia, so seeing the kids' interest in something pertaining to the Middle East was special to me. And having visited the pyramids when I was a kid and seeing the effort that they put into their work was astonishing."

The exhibit will remain on display for approximately a month in the Katrina Research Center.
