Egypt: Foreign Ministry - Country Ready to Help in Sahel Fight Against Terror
17 November 2011
Assistant Foreign Minister for Counter Terrorism Coordination Ashraf Mohsen said Wednesday that his country is ready to offer its expertise in the fight against terror in the Sahel region.
The Arab Spring showed that religious fanaticism could be rooted out, Mohsen told a multi-national meeting in Algiers to discuss anti-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region.
Around 150 security experts have gathered for the Global Counter terrorism Forum (GCTF). The gathering is mainly concerned with security issues in the Sahel region.
The two-day meeting is the latest in an ongoing series dedicated to deepening regional cooperation.
It followed a similar meeting held on September 22-23 in New York.
Since 2010, four Sahelian countries, including Algeria, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, cooperate militarily as part of a Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff based in Tamanrasset, in the extreme south of Algeria.
