This revelation - which was featured in the Independent on Sunday - means the UK government is asking Egyptians to repay millions of pounds used to keep their dictators in power. It came just days after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg visited Cairo to declare his support for democracy. Will you help us spread the word? On Monday, debt campaigners from around the country converged on Westminster to lobby their MPs and hold a 'skeletons in the cupboard' protest outside Vince Cable's Business department - responsible for 90% of debts now owed to the UK. We handed in thousands more postcards calling for an immediate investigation into the origins of all debts to the UK – meaning over 10,000 people have now written to Vince Cable directly to demand an audit of UK debts. If you haven't signed our petition yet, you can still do so: Also on Monday the new Popular Campaign to Drop Egypt's Debt was launched in Cairo as part of a global day of action on Egypt's debt. We were joined in London by Dina Makram-Ebeid from the campaign, who said: "We believe that Egypt's debt is Mubarak's debt. It is not the Egyptian people's. Egyptians never had a say in the borrowing that was being made in their name, let alone borrowing to buy arms." "Dropping Egypt's debt is fundamental to achieving the goals of 'bread, freedom and human dignity' that the people revolted for early this year." Jubilee Debt Campaign will work with the Egyptian campaign to demand debt justice in the months ahead. We are supporting calls for a debt audit to take place in Egypt as part of strengthening and deepening the movement towards democracy. Many thanks for all your support, |
