EIGHTEEN months after leaving one of Hosni Mubarak's most notorious jails, Egypt's Islamist President-elect, Mohammed al-Morsi, moved into his predecessor's Cairo office yesterday and began to form a new government.
Mr Morsi, a California-trained engineer whose children have US citizenship, also met Field Marshal Mohammed Tantawi, Mr Mubarak's defence minister who became head of the ruling junta after the revolution.
His generals have been reluctant to cede power without first securing the military a prominent role in any new government. They even rewrote the constitution when it appeared that the Islamists were about to win the presidency, severely restricting the head of state's powers.
Although the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces is due to transfer power at the end of June, in reality there are expected to be weeks, if not months, of protracted negotiations to establish what powers the new president will have, and whether a ruling to dissolve the Islamist-dominated parliament will be allowed to stand.
